What exactly is the point of trying to overcome or apprehend a group with the idea of ruling them IF THERE IS NO ONE LEFT TO RULE IN THE END?

If Russia launches its nuclear weapons at the United States, and we’re already essentially exterminated as a result, then what exactly would be the point of launching our missiles at them?
